![]() In one early mission, you repair a theater projector to watch a recording of a dead character, but instead of an actual video, you’re basically treated to a PowerPoint presentation. Sometimes you’re greeted with a flashback scene where two or more sentient nervous systems exposit backstory as you just stand there and watch, unable to progress until it’s over. Considering that Redfall is Arkane’s first next-gen title, it feels low-rent in many areas. I watched, mouth agape, as the camera slowly rotated around characters posing like action figures, while the game dropped even more exposition. Redfall's issues are more than just skin-deep its storytelling is equally baffling. Likewise, smoke and blood lack detailed textures. This extends to the cartoonish character designs, which carry a lifeless, plasticine look about them, from the game’s main cast to the vamps themselves. The world does not feel lived in, and nothing seems to have weight. Redfall uses the same stylish art approach found in previous Arkane projects, but its presentation here is startlingly bad. You’re greeted with flat textures, odd lighting, and janky animations that feel unpolished (and perhaps just flat-out unfinished). The especially powerful vampires refer to themselves as gods, and human cultists worship them with religious fervor.Īlthough the setting and concept are exciting on paper, you realize something is off the moment the gameplay kicks in. You’re trapped on a fictional island that finds itself swarming with sinister vampires, crafted by a suspicious pharmaceutical company not unlike Resident Evil’s Umbrella Corporation. Instead of leveraging the beautifully animated cutscenes we saw in preview trailers, the game starts with a slideshow exposition dump that details Redfall's world and its circumstances. Unlike recent misses such as Minecraft Legends, Redfall does not start strong. To say it's the worst game I’ve ever played would be hyperbolic, but it's easily the worst game of the year so far. Redfall is ugly, runs poorly, features shallow gameplay, and suffers from just about every bug and glitch imaginable. Unfortunately, the game fundamentally fails at almost every turn. And now we have Redfall, Microsoft’s first $69.99 PC game (it's also available on the Xbox Series S/X for the same price). Among the many developers under ZeniMax's umbrella, Arkane Studios is the crew with the most eyes on its back due to its library of critically acclaimed games such as Dishonored, Prey, and most recently, Deathloop. The Xbox faithful have eagerly awaited the new and exclusive fruits to come from Microsoft's ZeniMax acquisition in 2021. Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security Software.
